What Does Stewardship Involve?
LLCT stewards a lot of land
Working in concert with the Lincoln Conservation Commission, LLCT stewards
over 3,000 parcels of land in Lincoln. Some of these parcels are in private
ownership, some are owned by the Town, and most are owned by LLCT.
"Stewardship" means taking care of the land
When LLCT agrees to take ownership of a parcel of Conservation Interest, or to
hold a Conservation Restriction (a legal agreement restricting use of the parcel to
Conservation Uses), LLCT is undertaking a fiduciary and moral obligation to
protect the Conservation Interests of that piece of land. That means understanding
the parcels condition at the time of the restriction, monitoring the parcel over time
to ensure that the conservation interests are not harmed, and taking action to
restore the conservation values if necessary.
Stewardship involves three steps
- Creation of a “baseline” document of text, photos and maps showing the
physical and ecological features of each conservation parcel;
- Annual monitoring of each property, to identify any significant changes
through natural or human events; and
- Follow-up and enforcement when conservation values may be harmed.
Summer interns complete the baseline and monitoring work under the supervision
of LLCT volunteer board members. Board members take the lead on enforcement
LLCT is a National Model for Stewardship Practices
The Land Trust Alliance (“LTA”), the national organization of land trusts which
promulgates land trust standards, has identified the LLCT as a national model for
land trusts without full-time stewardship staff. The LLCT and the Massachusetts
Land Trust Coalition will work with LTA on revised standards and practices for all
land trusts.
